Book Title: Lucky or Smart?
Author: Bo Peabody
Bo Peabody’s story which takes us from potentially unemployed “B” student university graduate to multi-millionaire, is the main reason that “Lucky or Smart?” deserves to be a part of the library of anyone who has ever contemplated a business start-up.
Peabody was the driving force behind the Tripod Homepage Builder, an internet tool allowing anyone with internet access build their own web page using the free tools and space available through Tripod. Peabody didn’t design the homepage builder. He freely admits that it wasn’t even his idea, but on December 31, 1997, he sold Tripod in exchange for $58 million dollars in stock in Lycos. He sold the Lycos stock after two years which, by then, had increased in value tenfold! Was Peabody lucky or smart?
Peabody’s answer? “I was smart enough to realize I was getting lucky”.
It is easy to despise the books that purport to share the secrets of the rich and famous, or those agonizing “you can do it” books written by people whose major success has been in conning people into paying a lot of money to hear them tell them that “they can do it too” and then spinning hokey and ridiculous “rags to riches” stories about people who “were handed lemons and made lemonade”. Mostly their business acumen resides in convincing people that they have transferable skills when actually they are secular preachers anointed by the god of the holy dollar. Bo Peabody doesn’t fall into this category and neither does his book, Lucky or Smart?
The book is subtitled: Secrets to an Entrepreneurial Life. Primarily, Peabody, is a successful entrepreneur sharing what he believes has made him such a success for the benefit of budding entrepreneurs.
Even the book’s brevity is a strength. It is as well to allow Peabody to have the last word: “If your idea is big enough, and crazy enough, all you have to do is survive. If you survive, you will succeed”.
“Lucky or Smart?” by Bo Peabody is published in Australia by Random House Australia.
